Mozilla Corporation has re-branded it’s under development mobile OS “Boot to Gecko” aka B2G as Firefox OS which was announced last year in July.
The Firefox OS is built on open web standards using HTML5 and is based on Gecko browser engine that powers Firefox. All the phone’s features and running apps, will act like web apps, be developed using advanced HTML techniques and JavaScript.
The company is aiming to target Android based smartphones initially. Although the idea to develop a browser based mobile OS was clicked when its Firefox browser was been ripped off from the most popular mobile operating system, Apple’s iOS.
As per Mozilla blog’s post, Hong Kong’s TCL Communication Technology and China’s ZTE have shown their interest and will manufacture first Firefox OS devices.
Mozilla is expected to launch Firefox OS commercially in early 2013.
